IMG_1472One of Toronto’s favorite improvisers, Ken Hall, is taking the reigns of Revel Theatre Collective‘s next Barn Burner Workshop. On March 10, learn how to confidently create bigger and better characters. Not only that, but you’ll get the chance to take your new skills to the stage and play in the jam that caps off the Monthly Barn Burner show that night.

This month’s Revel Theatre Collective’s Monthly Barn Burner featured our special guest David Razowsky. Fresh out of a weekend intensive workshop organized by our pals at ZTRP Productions, David and his students showed us some powerfully real and hilarious improv drawn directly from the current moment. After intermission, David joined the cast of Illusionoid for a live taping of their popular improvised radio show podcast. The night was hosted by standup comic Eric Andrews.

IMG_6275Toronto, ON – 02/07/2013Revel Theatre has once again teamed up with ZTRP Productions to bring back David Razowsky, actor and improviser, to teach and perform at Revel Theatre Collective’s monthly improv showcase BARN BURNER. The February 10th edition will feature Razowsky performing alongside his students from that afternoon’s workshop. Rather than going for a cheap joke (easily done), Razowsky grounds his improvisation in good acting and genuine commitment to the scene.

The February 10th show will be hosted by stand-up Eric Andrews and feature old-time radio show-themed act Illusionoid (Paul Bates, Nug Nahrgang, Lee Smart). Named one of NOW Magazine’s Top Ten Comedy Shows of 2012, Illusionoid always delivers whip-smart, artfully stylized comedy.

Revel Theatre’s Monthly BARN BURNER happens every second Sunday of the month at 8pm artist-run venue Unit 102 (376 Dufferin Street) located on the edge of Parkdale. Tickets are $5. After the show audience members are invited to join the cast at a nearby watering hole to keep the party going.

Toronto, ON – 01/05/2013 – January. A tough time to get out of the house what with the cold Canadian winters and all. But also a good time to catch some hot improv. The January 13th edition of Revel Theatre Collective’s monthly improv showcase BARN BURNER will feature three amazing acts that will warm you all over like a rum-based beverage.

The January 13th show will be hosted by storyteller Sage Turtle (the lady behind True Stories, Made Up Plays) and feature Jimi and Pete (Peter Madore, Jimi Shlag) and Disco Taxi (Danz Altvater, Katie Kotulak, Deoborah Ring, Noemi Salamon). Headlining will be the Best That Ever Did It (Craig Anderson, Kyle Dooley, Matt Folliott, Conor Holler, Mark Little). What’s the “it”? Change out of your track pants and find out!

Each and every BARN BURNER is capped off with an all-out totally improvised comedy jam session. At the door audience members are encouraged to put their names in a draw so they can win a chance to join the cast. Not only will you have the chance to play with some of Toronto’s hottest improvisers, winners will also get their money back from the door. It could be you!

Photos from the Barn Burner: Holiday edition

Posted: December 10, 2012 by kevin in Media

In December, Revel Theatre Collective’s Monthly Barn Burner was holiday-themed! Beauty School Dropouts and El Fantoma gifted us with some hilarious improv. Then, we reignited an ages-old religious conflict by pitting Santa vs. The Maccabees. In the end, The Maccabees took the night. The night was hosted by standup comedian and standup guy Jamie O’Connor.

Toronto, ON – 01/12/2012 – ‘Tis the season to pit major world religions against each other. The December 9th edition of Revel Theatre Collective’s monthly improv showcase BARN BURNER will feature a festive set entitled Santa vs. the Maccabees. Betcha didn’t know “Santa” was a religion. Well, it is.

The December 9th show will be festooned with not one, but two opening acts: Beauty School Dropouts (Andrea Ballantyne, Maria Hajigeorgiou, Courtney Walker) and El Fantoma (Ted Hallett, Steve Hobbs, Wayne Molinski). Capping things off – the way only religious conflict can – will be Santa vs. the Maccabees. On the Santa side are performers Cameron Algie, Tanya Casoula, Alice Gammill, Maria Hajigeorgiou, Ted Hallett, Moniquea Marion, Ruslana Stoviski and Taylor White. On the Maccabees side are performers Ariel Bialski, Rob Chodos, Nadine Djoury, Yitzi Gal, Isaac Kessler, Jimi Shlag and Karen Stern. But I didn’t need to tell you that – look at their last names. Your host BARN BURNER will be recent Cream of Comedy nominee – Jamie O’Connor!

Each and every BARN BURNER is capped off with an all-out totally improvised comedy jam session. At the door audience members are encouraged to put their names in a draw so they can win a chance to join the cast. No, not THAT change (if you are thinking puberty… or menopause… hmmm).  Anyways, Revel Theatre is changing!  We’ve hung up our sex toys and said goodbye to The Piece of Garbage Sex Dungeon: A Night of Sophisticated Comedy, and opened up a Barn, to have a monthly BARN BURNER!

That’s right, on the second Sunday of every month you can come on down to Unit 102 for Revel Theatre’s Monthly Barn Burner where Toronto’s Best Improvisers Set the Stage on Fire!

Check out our amazing line-up for our first official Barn Burner on November 11 here, and check out the amazing new poster by resident graphic artist Alice Moran!

See you November 11!

Love,

Revel Theatre Collective

This week, Revel Theatre offered its space to a worthy cause: The October 21 Greater Toronto Improv Festival! Here is the photographic evidence of a phenomenal night of improv. Photos by Kevin Thom.
